Marseille is France's oldest city, with its origins traced back to 600 BC. This former trading post by the Romans has a resplendent backdrop of rolling hills and fantastic limestone cliffs. Also the gateway to Africa, Marseille is home to many cultural ethnicities. Its attractions are likewise as diverse as its people.
Vieux Port is the central landmark in Marseille, thus most of the popular sights are located within the old port. Two imposing forts, St. Nicolas and Saint Jean, flank Vieux Port. Walking around will lead to finely restored buildings and the Notre Dame de La Garde, the highest point in Marseille.
Another spectacular cathedral is La Cathedrale de la Nouvelle Major, bearing the architectural styles of the Roman-Byzantine era. Chateau d'If, is a 16th century castle converted into a prison which is more popularly immortalised through the book and movie, Alexander Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo.
The impressive Palais du Pharo was Napoleon's residence, overlooking the sea and Chateau d'If. Visitors can gaze at the palace's opulent interiors as it is open to the public.
