Atlantic City is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States of America and is famous for its boardwalk, casino gambling, and the inspiration for the board game called Monopoly. The city has a total area of 17.4 square miles, 11.4 of which is land and 6.0 miles of which is water. It is located on Absecon Island and has a city population of 35, 770 as of 2008.
Atlantic City was always known for being a resort town. It hugs the Atlantic Ocean, giving the city a spectacular view and was a prime real estate for developers. The city was incorporate in 1854, containing portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township. Its boardwalk, which made the city famous, was built in 1870 as a solution to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, a constant problem at the time. The boardwalk was expanded and modified several times. It is now 5.75 miles long, ends at the Ventnor/Margate border and is currently the world's longest boardwalk. Atlantic City was also known for developing the first Oceanside amusement pier. When the city's economy plummeted and the residents experienced poverty, casino gambling was approved in 1976. After this historic event, the first legal casino in the United States was born on May 26, 1978.
Now, casino gambling has become a household name and has attracted many tourists from all around the globe. Tourists never run out of attractions in Atlantic City. They can visit the boardwalk, visit piers and arcades, and take a trolley tour of the city. Atlantic City is also rich in culture and history too. Visitors can visit the Atlantic City Historical Museum and Art Center, the Absecon Lighthouse, and the Atlantic City Aquarium.
