
Augusta is also known as Augusta-Richmond County and is a consolidated city in the state of Georgia, United States. Augusta is the largest city in East Central Georgia and the second largest city in the state. It is located on the south bank of the Savannah River in between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. It is home to a 400,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan-area.
Augusta was founded by General James E. Oglethorpe in 1736. This makes the Augusta the second oldest city in Georgia. The name Augusta was derived from the Princess Augusta, the wife of the Prince of Wales whom General Oglethorpe named the city after.
Augusta is a city internationally known for hosting The Masters golf tournament every spring. It is also well-known for being the hometown of James Brown. Augusta offers tourists and residents a wide array of cultural and recreational activities. It is home to a world-class river walk that holds many activities such as the Augusta Invitation Regatta, the Augusta Southern Nationals and the World's Richest Drag Boat Race. Augusta has been ranked the second most favorable place to live in the state of Georgia.
