Bangor is a city in the US state of Maine; it is also the county seat of Penobscot County. It serves as a major cultural and commercial center for the eastern and northern parts of Maine. Bangor also serves as the principal city in the Bangor Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2000, Bangor had a population of 31,473 according to the US Census Bureau. The Metropolitan area it belongs to has an estimated population of around 148,000.
Nicknamed, the 'Queen City', Bangor was originally known as Condeskeag Plantation. In the late 18th century, it was later incorporated as a town. Local legend reports that the area was originally to be called 'Sunbury', but that it was instead named after a hymn tune entitled 'Bangor'. By the 19th century, Bangor was prospering as a lumber port. It began to be billed as 'The Lumber Capital' of the world despite the fact that most of the lumber actually originated upriver from neighboring towns. Wood products were still a big part of Bangor's economy by the turn of the century, but it has since diversified. The city is served by the Bangor International Airport. It is also located alongside several state routes including US 1, US2, I-95, and State Route 15. Ferry service can also be accessed from the Bay Harbor.
