About Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana. It is Louisiana's second largest city and represents the best of Louisiana's vibrant culture. The Baton Rouge is known as the major industrial, petrochemical, and port center of South America. Its port, the Port of Baton Rouge, is the ninth largest in the United States in terms of weight.

Baton Rouge is situated in the southeast portion of the state along the Mississippi River. The city's location and historical importance can be owed to the Istrouma Bluff which helps protect the city from flooding and other natural disasters. The name Baton Rouge came from the French explorer, Sieur d'lberville who upon leading an exploration party up the Mississippi river, saw a reddish cypress pole that was festooned with fish and bloody animals. They called this tree "le baton rouge" or red stick though the native name of the city was Istrouma.

Now, Baton Rouge is home to 774,327 residents. The city now boasts of being home to Louisiana State University and Southern University as well as other businesses and industrial facilities. Tourists can explore the city's arts and theater by visiting the Shaw Center for the Arts or experience the festivities of the city firsthand since Baton Rouge hosts many Mardi Gras parties, the biggest event of the year.
