About Bergen
Bergen is Norway's second largest city. It is located in Hordaland country, with a population of around 225,000 people. Founded in 1070, the city today serves as the central hub both for economics and for culture. In year 2000, Bergen was honored as the "European Capital of Culture" along with eight other European cities.

Situated amidst the mountains called, "De syv fjell" which means 'The Seven Mountains', the city offers the traveler or the tourist a different metropolitan experience, as the lush green mountain background gives the city a different and distinct countryside vibrancy. In fact, because the mountains prompt frequent rainfall, the city has been called "The City of Rain," a label borrowed from Seattle in the United States. One of the most significant rain histories of the city is that between October 29, 2006 and January 21, 2007, the city experienced rainfall every single day. At one point, umbrella vending machines were set up throughout the city.

Bergen is home to important research institutions, including The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, which serves as an important institute in providing significant advice regarding the region's ecosystems.
