
Blackpool is a seaside town located in Lancashire in England. The town lies along the coast of the cast Irish Sea and is the fourth largest settlement in the North West England with its population of 142,900 just after Liverpool, Manchester and Warrington. The town rose to prominence after it was heavily promoted as a major center of tourism in the 19th century where inhabitants of the northern mill towns were the target.
The city is heavily dependent on tourism and the factory workers of northern English during the early 20th century usually flock to the town to celebrate their annual holidays. It is also the preferred destination of tourists from Glasgow up until today. Blackpool's Winter Gardens also hosts major trade union and political conferences that range from the TGWU with thousands of visitors and delegates to the smaller conferences such as the NUS and CWU.
The town holds yearly festivals such as the annual ballroom dance competition, the Rebellion Punk rock Festival and the Blackpool Illuminations. The town is also considered as the gay capital of the north with its year gay pride celebrations.
