About Boca Raton
Boca Raton is a city located in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida. It was incorporated in 1925 and as of a 2006 US Census Bureau Estimate, it has around 86,396 people. The name 'Boca Raton' was originally listed as 'Boca Ratones'; locals initially translated the name into its literal Spanish meaning, which is 'Rat's Mouth'. It was a term used by sailors to refer to sharp jagged rocks that gnawed at the ropes that held the ships to port.

Around 1904, Japanese farmers from the Yamato Colony began to convert land to the west of the city into pineapple plantations. During WWII, however, much of the land was confiscated and used to house Boca Raton's Army Air Force Base. After the war, the city became the southern home of the IBM Corporation. IBM's presence helped made the city grow. The Corporation stayed in Boca Raton until 1996 when the facility was closed.

The city is known for its high income demographic and for its affluent social community. It is also known for having a large Jewish and South American population. Often referred to simply as 'Boca', the city has been repeatedly referenced in several movies and television series. Notable was 'The Nanny' where the lead character would always wish for her parents to move and retire to Boca.

Notable residents from Boca Raton include singer Jon Bon Jovi, tennis player Chris Evert, NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon, shock rock artist Marilyn Manson, tennis player Andy Roddick and baseball player Pete Rose, to name a few.
