Boise is the capital of the US State of Idaho and is also the state's most populous city. It is located in the Northwestern United States and serves as the principal city of the Bois City-Nampa metropolitan area. Boise is also the largest city between Salt Lake City in Utah and Portland in Oregon. The city serves as the primary government, economic, cultural and transportation center for the area.
Boise found its roots in the 1800s during the gold rush days. There are many stories regarding the original source of the name Boise. The name of the city may well have actually derived from earlier mountain man usage. Boise is home to the historic original Fort Boise, now known as Old Fort Boise which lies down the Boise River near the confluence with the Snake River at the Oregon border. The new fort was built to protect the vast number of travelers coming to the area upon the discovery of gold in 1862 in the Boise Basin.
Boise has many outdoor activities to offer to residents and tourists alike such as skiing, biking and boating. Tourists are awed by the city's strong senses of culture and history, stunning natural landscapes and an open, family-friendly atmosphere. It is home to many large regional, national and international companies such as Simplot Corporation, Boise Cascade, Washington Group, Micron Technology and Hewlett-Packard. It is also home to Boise State University, the state's largest university. As a thriving hub of economic activity, Boise was even rated as Number 1 on the 2005 Best Places for Business and Careers by Fortune Magazine.
