
Burlingame is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula and is part of the San Mateo County in the US state of California. The city has a significant shoreline on the San Francisco Bay. Architecturally, the city is known for its many examples of surviving Victorian architecture. It was initially settled by wealthy San Franciscans who were looking for a better climate for their second homes. Named after diplomat Jimmy Thompson and Anson Burlingame, the city was incorporated in 1908.
In 1960s, the city saw an increase in its population. It proximity to the San Francisco International Airport also helped the city gain airline support services. As of the 2000 US Census, the city had a population of 28,158.
Nicknamed, the 'City of Trees' because of the number of trees found within the city, Burlingame has over 18,000 public trees. Most residential properties in the area as well have trees that are protected by the government. Additionally, the city has many Eucalyptus groves and parks that add to the tree numbers.
Burlingame's economy in the 1920s was based on automobile retailing. The city also has several airlines service oriented companies including care rentals and lodging areas. LSG/Sky Chefs is also has a base in Burlingame and employs around 281 people. This company is known for providing major American and international airlines the food they provide passengers. Another food based company located in the city is the Guittard Chocolate Company. The headquarters for Virgin America is also located in the city and is its 13th largest employer with around 200 employees.
