About Campbell
Campbell is a city in Santa Clara County, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is part of the Silicon Valley and is located in the West Valley of Santa Clara County. Campbell is not a major high-tech city but is home eBay and its creator, Pierre Omidyar. As of 2007, Campbell is home to 39,200 residents.

Campbell was named after Benjamin Campbell, the founder of the city. In 1851, Campbell bought 160 acres of land in the southern part of Santa Clara Valley where he cultivated hay and grain. In the year 1878, Campbell sold his land to a railroad company for $5 an acre. In 1887, the first subdivision was recorded west of the railroad from Campbell Avenue. This area became the center for shipping fruit grown in the surrounding area. The Campbell Fruit Grower's Union became a well-known cooperative in the area with J.C Ainsley Packing Company, Hyde Cannery, and Payne Cannery as the main fruit packing companies. In 1952, Campbell was officially incorporated as a city.

Campbell is primarily a suburban residential area with only a few large shopping centers or business complexes. Campbell's downtown is located near the intersection between the railroad and Campbell Avenue where many shops, bars and restaurants. Campbell is home to the Pruneyard Shopping Center which was involved in a famous US Supreme court case. The common dessert fruit cocktail was invented in the city of Campbell.
