During the 10th century, the city was referred to as Canua, a name which may have been derived from a reed called 'canna'. By the end of the 11th century, the city had already become known by the name 'Cannes'. The 20th century saw the birth of new luxury hotels in the city. After WWI, there were lesser German and British tourists in the city. There was, however, an increase in number of American tourists.
Several festivals are held in the city each year. It is, however, the Cannes Film Festival that draws the most international faire. The festival is usually held in May and is participated by Filmmakers from all around the world. Other festivals held in Cannes include the Carnival on the Riviera, the International Festival of Games, the Festival de la Plaisance and the International Actor's Film Festival.
Cannes has been the setting of several films and movies. An example of this is the 2007 film Mr. Beans Holiday.
