Dallas is ninth largest city in the Unites States and is the 3rd Largest City in Texas. It is known as 'Big D' and has a population of over 1.3 million. The Loughborough University lists the city as a gamma world city because of its importance in terms of commerce and finance. It officially became a city in 1856 and has since then become one of the most prosperous cities in the US. In its early years, Dallas relied on its oil and cotton industries. Modern day Dallas has an economy that is largely based on banking, telecommunications, energy, transportation, commerce and computer technology.
The city has a tall skyline with buildings rising over 700 feet. Most of the city's architectural style is modernist and postmodernist since it was build during the late 19th and the early 20th century. Notable architectural structures in Dallas include the JFK Memorial, the Fountain Place, the Renaissance Tower and the Bank of America Plaza.
Politically speaking, Dallas is the third most liberal cities behind Austin and El Pas. It is also known as the center of evangelical Protestant Christianity in the United States. When it comes to cuisine, Dallas is known for its authentic Mexican, Tex-Mex cuisine and Barbecues. In sports, the city is home to the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Desperados and the Dallas Stars.
