Dana Point is a city in Southern Orange County in the US stare of California. As of the 2000 census, the city has an estimated population of 35,110 people. The city is a popular destination among surfers because it is one of the few coastal areas in Orange County with ready access to the State Route 1. The city is also the home of the famed surf break called 'Killer Dana'.
The city was named after the Dana Port headland, which in turn was named after author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., who wrote the book 'Two Years Before the Mast'. The city is also known for being one of the few places where a specimen of the megamouth shark was caught.
Annual cultural events in Dana Point include the Festival of the Whales. It is two weekend celebration that has been held in the city since 1972. The 'Tail Ships Festival' is also held in the city every September.
