Dartmouth is a community of the Halifax Regional Municipality and is a former city of Nova Scotia a Canadian province. The city is also the planning area. Dartmouth is also a home to the eastern part of the Capital District of the Halifax regional Municipality. Dartmouth is founded in 1750.

On April 1, 1996, the government decided that the boundaries within the Halifax County be united into a single tier government under the name Halifax Regional Municipality. Dartmouth and the neighboring city of Halifax, Bedford and the County of Halifax were dissolved. Thus, that time the City of Dartmouth was dissolved, yet the government change its status to a separate community at Halifax but still retain its status as part to the metropolitan of Halifax.

Dartmouth is located on the Eastern part of Halifax and was nicknamed the city of lakes. The reason for this nickname is due to the large number of lakes found in the city.
