Daytona Beach was once inhabited by Timucuan Indians. It wasn't until the end of the civil war that Florida experienced a boom in tourism. The city was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1876 with the city being named after its founder, Matthias D. Day. In 1926, the separate towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze merged as "Daytona Beach". In the 1920s, the city was named "The World's Most Famous Beach". The beach in the city was hard packed and allowed motorized vehicles to drive on the beach. This paved the way for the popularity of motorsports. Over 50 years ago, Daytona Beach was famous for the Daytona Beach Road Course. Now, it has been replaced by the Daytona International Speedway and the city is home to NASCAR and Grand American Road Racing Association.
Daytona Beach is known for being a year-round family-friendly resort area. The city is also known as a seasonal town because of the many large groups of tourists visiting the area during special events such as Speedweeks, Bike Week and Biketoberfest. Daytona Beach is also a popular place for springbreakers.
