
Delavan is a city in Walworth country in Wisconsin United States that has a population of 7, 956 in the recent 2000 census. The City is partially located within the town of Delavan. It is the home for the Wisconsin School for the Deaf and Andes Candies. The city was home to circus companies in 1847 to 1894.
The first circus to quarter in the territory was the Mabie Brothers. It has a famous rogue elephant named Romeo. The Barnum Circus was organized here by William C. Coup and Dan Costello in 1871.
Delavan was the site of Wisconsin's Circus Centennial as part of the state's celebration of sisterhood over 100 years. It was selected by the US post office to issue on a first day cover basis the five cent American Circus commemorative postage stamp. Delavan's nineteenth century circus colonies are buried in Spring Grove and St. Andrew cemeteries over 130members.
