Elmhurst is a neighborhood is Queens, a borough of New York. It was established in 1652 and is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the state of New York. It is estimated that by the 1980's Elmhurst was already home to over 112 nationalities. In 1898, Elmhurst was first considered as a fashionable neighborhood after Queens was incorporated into the Greater City of New York that same year.
The neighborhood is home to several historic churches. These include the First Presbyterian Church of Newton which was built there in 1893. Another historic church is the St James Parish Hall built in 1734. Other historic churches include St. Adalbert Roman Catholic Church, the Reformed Dutch Church of Newton, and the Elmhurst Baptist Church.
The Queens Center Mall, considered to be one of the most profitable malls in the United States, is located in Elmhurst. The Queen's Palace Mall is also found in Elmhurst. It is also home to several public schools and is served by several subways stations including those in Woodhaven Boulevard, Grand Avenue - Newton, and Elmhurst Avenue.
This Queen's neighborhood was also the setting of several movies and TV shows. Most notable is the 1988 film "Coming to America". The fictional restaurant 'McDowell's' from the movie is located in Elmhurst. An existing Wendy's store was altered for the movie's filming.
Notable Elmhurst residents include Smush Parker (NBA), ac tress Julissa Bermudez, associate justice Antonin Scalia, actor Carroll O"Connor, and Omar Minaya who is the general manager from the New York Mets.
