Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, which are British Overseas Territories. It is also the site of George Town. The residents of Grand Cayman and other Cayman Islands are referred to as 'Caymanian'. No natural source of fresh water can be found on the island and fresh water has to be sourced from desalination facilities. The lack of rivers and streams, however, contributes to the clarity of the waters surrounding Grand Cayman.
Economically, Grand Cayman gets over 50% of its GDP from tourism and tourism related endeavors. The most popular tourist attractions in Grand Cayman include Seven Mile Beach. Activities available to tourists include all sorts of water sports, especially snorkeling and scuba diving. A turtle farm is featured on the island's West Bay.
The Owens Roberts International Airport serves the island. The western side of the island is home to several restaurants, resorts, and nightclubs. The eastern district, on the other hand, is known for food destinations that offer native Caymanian cuisine.
In 2004, the island was devastated by Hurricane Ivan. It was the worst hurricane to hit the islands for over 8 decades. Grand Cayman has since then recovered and continues to be a major tourist destination.
