Higuey, formally known as Salvaleon de Higuey, is the capital city of the Dominican Republic's Altagarcia province. The city has been nicknamed 'La Ciudad del Sol' and is known as the Capital of the Dominican Tourism. Higuey is also sometimes called the Capital of Dominican Stockbreeding. The Dominican Republic's River Yuma flows through the urban area of Higuey. As of 2006, the city has an estimated population of around 150,000 people.
The city's economy is heavily dependent on tourism. Several hotels are found on Gray Tip and many businesses thrive on the manufacture of tourist products as well as on tourism related commerce. The Basilica of la Altagracia is a popular tourist attraction in Higuey away from the beached. Aside from tourism, agriculture is also a big part of the Higuey economy. They mainly produce tobacco, rice, cacao, coffee, reed, and cattle.
