About Hyannis
Hyannis is a village in the city of Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. It is the largest of the 7 villages on Cape Cod and is its commercial and transportation hub. A 1990 census resulted in Hyannis being categorized as an urban area. This is the reason why the village is sometimes referred to as the 'Capital of the Cape'. The village houses the offices of the city of Barnstable and two of the important shopping districts. The historic downtown Main Street and the Rte 132 commercial district are also found in Hyannis.

Aside from being an important commercial and transportation center for Barnstable, Hyannis is also a popular tourist destination. It is also the primary ferry boat and general aviation link to Nantucket Island. The village also provides a secondary access to Nantucket via Martha's Vineyard. The village also has a large natural harbor making it one of the largest recreational boating and commercial fishing ports on the Cape.

Attractions in Hyannis include the JFK Hyannis Museum located in the old Town Hall. It focuses on the time that the former president spent in the village. A memorial to the late president also stands on the Lewis Bay waterfront. It was erected in 1966 by Barnstable citizens. A statue honoring Iyannough can be found in downtown Hyannis.

Notable Hyannis include actress Judy Garland, four generations of the Kennedy Family, novelist Jack Kerouac, actor Raymond Goulding, NHL hockey players Erick Nickulas and Dan LaCouture. NHL referee Paul Stewart is also a Hyannis resident.
