Irving is a city in Dallas County in the US state of Texas. The 2006 Census estimate determined that Irving has a population of over 201,000 people. Otis Brown and J.O. "Otto" Schulze founded the city in 1903. The city is supposedly named after author Washington Irving, who was a favorite of Netta Barcus Brown. The city was incorporated in 1914 with Otis Brown serving as mayor. The history of the city was recorded in the book 'Irving: A Texas Odyssey' by Joseph Rice.
Several large companies make their home in Irving. These include Chuck E. Cheese's, ExxonMobil, Commercial Metals, Kimberly-Clark, Omni Hotels, Zale Corporation, Southern Star Concrete, and several others.
The city is served by the Trinity Railway Express and by several bus routes. It is also traversed by several highways including the Airport Freeway and the SH 183.
A famous landmark in Irving is the Mustang at Las Colinas, which is the largest equestrian sculpture in the United States and the world. The Las Colinas district of Irving is also the future home of the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. The Texas Stadium in Irving was the home of the Dallas Cowboys from 1971 to 2008.
Notable Irving current and former residents include baseball player Kerry Wood, Lee Harvey Oswald, actor Peter MacNicol, musician David Garza, Frank Beard who was the drummer for ZZ Top, and politician James Dickens. Several pro-football players also come from Irving and these include Brian Bosworth, Akin Ayodele, Tyson Thompson, and Demarcus Faggins.
