Jakarta is a major city in Indonesia and is ranked as the twelfth largest city in the world. It is known by other names such as: DKI Jakarta, Sunda Kelapa, Batavia, Djakarta, and Jayakarta. Jakarta sits at the coast, northwest of Java, and has an area of 661.52 square kilometers.

Since Jakarta is the established political and economic capital of Indonesia, the city attracts numerous people from all walks of life. Tourists and locals thrive within the city, and as a result Jakarta has developed a rather unique blend of cosmopolitan flavor despite the obvious diverse culture. Most of the local immigrants are from Java, and as such, local dialects of Javanese and Sudanese, as well as local customs and food have been introduced to the natives of Jakarta.

The history of Jakarta can be traced to the fourth century. This was when the city underwent numerous changes as well as huge doses of culture that have somehow remained intact over time. Interestingly, Jakarta's previous king, King Purnawarman, had left behind seven memorial stones that bore his name all over the area.
