The Municipality of Jasper is situated at the heart of Jasper National Park close to the British Columbia/Alberta border, 863 km from Vancouver, British Columbia and 414 km from Calgary, Alberta. Its location is said to be unique, because it is within a national park. Its governance is shared by the Municipality of Jasper and the Parks Canada Agency.
The Municipality of Jasper was created by the Province of Alberta on July 20, 2001, having limited authorities over municipal matters and only specific jurisdiction matters, except land use planning, development and matters of the environment.
Jasper is popular when it comes to hiking, mountain climbing and whitewater rafting and skiing on winters at the Marmot Basin. It is an ideal place to go anytime of the year because of its natural beauty and the chance to experience wildlife and outdoor activities. Common tourist destination areas include the Columbia Icefields, Miette Hot Springs, and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course.
