About Kamloops
Kamloops is a city in the British Columbia province of Canada. It is situated at the confluence of the two branches of the Thompson River. It is also located close to the Kamloops Lake. The city houses the regional district offices. The regions surrounding Kamloops and the city itself, is collectively referred to as Thompson County. Nicknamed the 'Tournament Capital of Canada', Kamloops has a motto stating 'Salus et Opus' or Health and Wellness.

The name 'Kamloops' is a anglicized version of the term 'Tk'emplups', which means 'meeting of the waters'. It refers to the confluence of the Thompson river branches. It is also said that the name may have originated from the French 'Camp des Loups', which means 'Camp of Wolves'. The term was most probably coined by the fur traders who resided in the city during its early years. The city was founded in 1811 as a fur trading post and was later incorporated in 1893. Sister cities include Uji (Japan) and Bacolod (Philippines).

The public schools in the city are a part of the School District 73. There are over 30 elementary schools in the city and close to 10 secondary schools. Private schools include the Kamloops Christian School and St Ann's Academy. A majority of the Kamloops' population is made up of Aboriginal people. Minority groups include Hispanics, Asians, Blacks, and those from the Middle East.

'Kamloops' was adopted as the name of a crated on the surface of Mars. It was officially adopted in 1991 by the International Astronomical Union.
