
La Romana is a city in the La Romana Province of the Dominican Republic. It is the largest city in the country, and as of 2005, it had a population of 250,000 people. It is also the capital of the La Romana province. The city's name comes form a balance that was once used to weigh merchandise for export. The patron saint of the city is Santa Rosa de Lima.
The city is served by the La Romana International Airport, which is a modern facility that opened in 2000. A growing tourist industry is found in the city and its proximity to other Dominican Republic areas such as San Pedro de Macoris and the national capital Santo Domingo de Guzman make La Romana popular to not only foreign tourists but to the local crowd as well. A popular destination in La Romana is the harbor.
The city has been nicknamed La Flor del Este or the Flower of the East.
