Officially known as "Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah," Langkawi Permata Kedah (Malay) is an archipelago of ninety-nine (99) islands that showcase only the most beautiful of beaches and the most impressive of island infrastructure. Its dense mangrove forests hide and reveal wild and exotic flora and fauna, while its commercial districts offer the best bargain in its duty-free shops.
Visitors to Langkawi feel a mystic presence in the islands, a presence reinforced by the tragic tale of Mahsuri, a young woman whose fate was to be cursed in the name of love. The Makam Mahsuri (Mahsuri's Mausoleum), is a major tourist attraction in the archipelago; it is said to be the burial place of the lovely maiden.
Other major attractions in the archipelago include paddling through the local streets to experience island lifestyle, as well as going on a thrilling cable car ride towards the summit of Mount Mat Cincang, which is the second highest point in the area. The Field of Burnt Rice, the Beach of Black Sand, and the Hot Springs are as likewise as fascinating as their intriguing names.
