Lisbon is the main city of Portugal and is the center of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area with around 2.8 million residents. Being the capital of Portugal, Lisbon has developed into being the wealthiest region in the country. It has also achieved a GDP per capita average that is above the level set by the European Union. In addition, it is also the location of the political center of Portugal being the seat of the government.
Lisbon has a very interesting history on its belt. Scientists have discovered that during the Neolithic age, the area where Lisbon is located was the home of Iberian-related people. They are the reason why megaliths, menhirs, and dolmens still survive around the city. By the first millennium BC, Lisbon was invaded by Celts and through intermarriage Celtic-speaking locals became the inhabitants, and were later referred to as Cempsi.
Although the city is not littered with skyscrapers and the like, Lisbon has achieved a charming balance between history, culture, and constant development. As such, Lisbon remains one of the must see tourist spots in the world.
