Lubbock is an American city located in the state of Texas. The city can be found at the northwestern part of the state in a region historically known as the Llano Estacado. Lubbock serves as the county seat of Lubbock County and has a population of 199,564 as of 2000 which made the city the 90th largest city in the United States and the 11th largest in Texas. Lubbock city acquired the nickname "Hub City" for being the economic, education, and health care hub of South Plains, a multi-county region. Lubbock is also known for being the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world.
The city of Lubbock was named after Thomas S. Lubbock, who was a former Texas Ranger and Confederate officer. Lubbock city is home to many country musicians and is also the home of the famous rock and roll legend Buddy Holly. Famous country musicians that came from Lubbock include the Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines, Mac Davis, Terry Allen and many more. Lubbock is also home to actor Chace Crawford. Lubbock city hosts the largest free festival in Texas called the Independence Day festival. Some of the attractions located in Lubbock include the National Ranching Heritage Center, the Southwest Collection, the Depot District, Silent Wings Museum, the Science Spectrum, and Mackenzie Park to name a few.
