
Lucerne is the capital city of the Canton of Lucerne in Switzerland and it is also the seat of the Lucerne District. As of the 2006 census, the city is estimated to have a population of around 57,890 people. The city is a popular tourist destination because of its location on the shores of Lake Lucerne. It is also within sight of Mounts Pilatus and Rigi in the Swiss Alps.
One of the most popular landmarks in the city is the Chapel Bridge. It is a 14th century wooden bridge and it attracts both local and foreign tourist traffic. Other attractions in Lucerne include the Swiss Transport Museum and the Lion Monument by Bertel Throvaldsen. The monument depicts a dying lion and is part of a small park within the city.
The city is home to several professional soccer/football clubs, with the most successful being FC Lucerne, which is a member of the Swiss Super League.
