Luxor is a city in Egypt where the Luxor Government lies. It is known as the location of the ancient city of Thebes and has acquired the name of "greatest open air museum". Directly opposite Luxor are the monuments and tombs that lie on the West Bank Necropolis. Among these include the Valley of the Queens and Valley of the Kings.

The city is in fact attracts thousands upon thousands of tourists every year just to check out the said monuments. As such, the tourism has contributed largely to the success and development of Luxor.

During ancient times, Luxor was referred to as the City of Amon-Ra. In addition, ancient Thebes was known as "the city of 100 gates" and sometimes even referred to as the city of the sun. This distinguished itself from the main location where worship of Ra which is located in the north of Egypt.
