About Lyon
Lyon is a city in east-central France located in the region of Rhone-Alpes. It is the second largest French urban area after Paris. Located between Paris and Marseille, Lyon is acknowledged for its importance as a center for business and economy. It is also considered the French center of gastronomy due to the presence of many of France's famous chefs in the city. Olympique Lyonnais, the local professional football club has helped increase Lyon's international notoriety by participating in international football championships. The city is also known for its role in history of cinema.

Being the second largest urbanized area in France, it is estimated that Lyon is home to over 1.7 million inhabitants. The city is also a center of industry and plays host to chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech institutions. A significant software industry that focuses on video games has also taken foothold in Lyon.

The city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is known for its historical architectural landmarks. The city also plays host to the headquarters of Interpol and Euronews. In the past, Lyon was known as the Silk Capital of the World.

Well known historical sites in Lyon include the Notre-Dame de Fourviere Basilica which overlooks the city. Other great sites include the Saint-Jean Cathedral, which is also the seat of the archbishop of Lyn. Places of note also include the Bartholdi Fountain located at the Palace des Terreaux, the statue of Louis XIV, the roman era theater on Fourviere Hill, and the Ile Barbe Island.
