Mahe is an island of the Seychelles. It is the largest of the islands and it lies somewhat north-east of the nation. In Mahe Island, the capital city of Victoria can be found accommodating around 90% of the whole country's total population. The name of Mahe Island is taken from a former Mauritius' French governor, Bertrand-Francois Mahe de La Bourdonnais.
At Mahe Island, the Morne Seychellois stands proud boasting its tallest peak at 905 meters, and it is situated in the Morne Seychellois National Park. The eastern and northern areas of the island are the locations of most of the population as well as the island's international airport which was officially opened in 1971.
In 1609, the British first set foot in Mahe Island. However, Europeans were not able to visit Mahe Island again for quite some time until the expedition of Lazare Picault in 1742. For years, Mahe Island remained a possession of the French since it was declared as a British colony.
