Marathon is located at the center of the Keys island chain and is located mainly on Vaca, Fat Deer and Grass Key. This island is a 10 mile long community and is considered a fishing community.

What tourist likes most of Marathon is its preserved tropical hardwood grove. A federally protected Somebrero Reef lies just a few miles offshore of Marathon. It is the only United States' living coral barrier reef. Their deep blue waters hosts a world class wreck diving on artificial reefs.

The total population of Marathon is 10,255 which comprises of 4,597 household wherein 2,735 families are residing in the city.
