The Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation is located within the borders of Ledyard Connecticut in New London County and Pequot River or what is now known as the Thames River.
The Mashantucket, after years of struggle, was recognized by the Congress in 1983, and was awarded financial resources to buy back eight hundred acres of Tribal land which was sold during crisis. In 1987, the Supreme Court granted sovereign tribes to operate casinos on their land, so the Native American Tribe decided to utilize gaming as an income generator. So was the beginning of the construction of the famous Foxwoods casino. In 1992, Foxwoods became one of the most successful and largest gaming operations in the Western Hemisphere. It provides jobs for tribal members and revenues that allowed the tribe to invest for the community's development.
Next to Foxwoods is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center which shows the tribe's history and culture, and which hosts local and international artists, musicians and artifacts all year round.
