Mexico City, often shortened to plain Mexico by its locals is the whole Mexico in one cosmopolitan town. Mexico City has been around for 20,000 years, starting out as small clusters of settlements around the lakes in the valley. The coming of the Aztecs signaled the beginnings of a civilization that would eventually become one of the most advanced in the world during that time, a civilization which now remains in the ruins and rubble of ancient temples in the outskirts of Mexico city and in the precious example of the El Templo Mayor, the only intact relic left of Mexico city's ancient Aztec past.
Today, Mexico City is a sprawling metropolis teeming with color, rich in history and yet modern and hip at the same time. Mexico City is the second most populous city in the world, second only to Tokyo, Japan. The city is a place that thrives in dirt and pollution, the incessant noise and smoke of traffic, the seemingly unending pothole-filled streets and the crowds in the city's open-air markets. It is also a place where vendors fill the streets with the colors of the day's flower produce and mimes, jugglers and other street performers compete for your attention.
Visit Mexico on a Sunday and you will perhaps find a slower-paced Mexico, when the locals decide to take things slow and unwind, people flock the plazas for short leisurely strolls or shop at the various weekend fairs at the Parque Sullivan.
