About Milwaukee
Milwaukee is a city in Milwaukee County located in the state of Wisconsin, USA. It is the largest city in the state and the 23rd largest city in the country. As of 2007, it is estimated that Milwaukee has a population of over 600,000 people. Nicknames for the city include: Cream City, Mil Town, Brew City, City of Festivals, The Mil, and 'Deutsch Athen' (German Athens).

The area where Milwaukee now stands used to be inhabited by several Native American tribes. The name 'Milwaukee' is derived from the Native American word Milioke, which means 'Pleasant Land'. French missionaries passed through the area during the 17th and 18th centuries. The city is known for its rich European history, which is a result of the massive number of European immigrants who settled into the city during its early life. The 19th century also saw an influx of German immigrants who were fleeing the 1848 Revolution. This is the main reason why German influence is evident and widespread throughout the city.

Milwaukee's economy used to rely heavily on Brewing. Once home to four of the largest breweries in the world, it has, however, diversified and is now home to a wide array of industries. The city also houses several Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies including Harley-Davidson, and GE Healthcare.

The city has been the setting of several movies and TV shows. Well known TV shows set in the city include 'Happy Days' and 'Lavern and Shirley'. Movies shot in the city include 'Blues Brothers' (1980), Wayne's World (1992), and 'Michael Clayton' (2007).
