Moncton is a city located in the Westmorland County in Canada. It is the most populous city in the census metropolitan area (CMA) and it is the second largest CMA in the Maritime Provinces. The city is considered to be one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in Canada. Nicknamed Hub City, Moncton has a motto of 'Resurgo' meaning 'I Rise Again'.
It was founded in 1766 after being settled three decades earlier. The city was incorporated in 1855 and was renamed after Lt Col Robert Monckton. The city lost its charter in 1862 after experiencing an economic collapse in the 1860s. It later regained it in 1875. The city experiences economic problems again in the 1980s after the closure of the CNR locomotive shops. It has since then recovered and has become one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.
The current economy of Moncton is diversified and is primarily based on transportation, retailing, distribution, and commercial heritage. The unemployment rate in the city is noted for being consistently above the average unemployment rate of the country. The city is served by the Greater Moncton International Airport. The Canadian National Railway, VIA Rail Canada and the New Brunswick East Coast Railway also serve the city. Several highways pass through Moncton and these include Route 2 of the Trans-Canada highway, Route 15, and Route 16.
Notable Moncton residents include Gordie Drillon, who was a NHL Hall of Famer and Scoring Champion. Other famous Moncton residents are Russ Howard Antoine Maillet, Northrop Frye, Holly Dignard, and Rob Wells.
