Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra, which is a state in India. It is one of the most densely populated cities on earth and it is estimated that 14 million people inhabit Mumbai's city proper. All in all, the city is estimated to be the home of over 19 million people and is the 4th largest agglomeration in the world.
The city is recognized as the entertainment and commercial capital of India. It has one of the deepest natural harbors in the country and is responsible for handling more than half of the country's sea trade cargo. Economically, Mumbai is also one of the most successful cities in India and contributes up to 40% of the country's maritime trade, 70% of capital transactions, 25% of the industrial output, and accounts for 5% of India's total GDP.
It is also considered the country's financial center as it houses important financial institutions such as the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Reserve Bank of India, and the National Stock Exchange of India. Most Indian and international companies with business in India hold their headquarters in Mumbai.
Bollywood, one of India's most famous cultural phenomenon also makes it home in Mumbai making the city the country's entertainment capital.
