Myrtle Beach is a resort city in US state of South Carolina and is located in Horry County. It grew from a community of lumber workers into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US. A 2000 census revealed that Myrtle Beach was the 13th fastest growing city in the United Sates. It is estimated that each year the city plays host to over 14.6 million tourists. Aside from its beaches, Myrtle Beach also attracts tourists as a shopping destination and for its role as a convention and conference center. The city is served by the Myrtle Beach Municipal Airpot and is also accessible by railroad and by land.
Founded in 1938, the city started out as a hub for the longing industry. It wasn't until the later part of the 20th century and the early 21st that its potential as a tourist destination was fully explored. The first Seaside Inn, however, was opened in 1901. Today, the economy in Myrtle Beach is tourism based and the city is peppered with beach resorts, hotels, and golf clubs that attract tourists. Agriculture, mainly the production of tobacco, watermelon, indigo, and berries, also adds to the city's GDP.
Always on the move to attract more tourists, the city is also home to notable museums and cultural centers. These include the Hard Rock Park, which is a park that's been themed after the famous Hard Rock Café. The Broadway at the Beach festival center also attracts its share of tourists. Another notable attraction in Myrtle Beach is the Family Kingdom Amusement Park.
