Nassau is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Bahamas and also serves as its commercial center. Located in the Island of New Providence, it is the largest city in the country and has a population of 260,000 accumulating almost 80% of the population, which according to a 2008 census totals 330,000. The city is a major tourist destination and is serviced by the Lynden Pindling International Airport located 10 miles from the city center. Nassau does not have a local government, it is instead, governed directly by an administrative division of the Bahamian government.

The city is located only 180 miles from Miami, Florida. This proximity contributes to its popularity with American tourists, especially after the ban of American travel to Cuba. It is the home of the world renowned Atlantis resort which accounts for more annual tourist arrivals than any other hotel in the region. The Atlantis is also renowned for employing more than 6,000 Bahamians, the largest outside of the government.

A colorful festival known as Junkanoo is a popular tourist attraction in Nassau. It is conducted during December 26 and on January 1 of each year. The city also celebrates a week long festival known as Junkanoo June.
