About Negril
Negril is a resort town in Jamaica located across parts of two parishes, Hanover and Westmoreland. The town's name is shortened version of the word 'Negrillo', which was the original name given to the town by the Spanish in 1914. It is said to be reference of the black cliffs that lie just south of the village. Despite its' long history, Negril did not become well known until the second half of the 20th century when it development into a resort town started.

At the start, access to the area proved difficult and arrivals to the island had to wade in the water to get to the land proper. This issue was later on amended. The improvement of the road between Negril and Montego Bay also helped facilitate easy transport into the town. Early vacationers to Negril rented rooms in the local houses or pitched tents in the front yards of houses already found there. However, as the island progressed, hotels and resorts were soon developed and used to accommodate guests.

Many travel magazines have included Negril's beaches into top 10 lists of the best beaches in the world. Perhaps the most famous aspect of Negril's coastline is its 7 mile stretch of beach. Today, the north end of the beach is occupied by all-inclusive resorts and to the south are smaller family-run hotels. The rest of Negril is still pretty much underdeveloped by the tourism industry manages to provide locals with jobs and an income sources. Its lack of development is also said to add to Negril's charm.
