Newark is a city in New Jersey, USA. It is the largest city in the state and is the 65th largest city in the country. Robert Treat and several Connecticut Puritans from the New Haven Colony founded the city in 1666. Although Treat wanted to name the new colony after Milford (Connecticut), Abraham Pierson (another settler) named the colony as "New Ark" to reflect the creation of a new community. The name was accepted and was later changed to Newark.
Although known for the riots that wrecked the city several decades ago, Newark has now recovered to become a revitalized city with new infrastructures, cultural centers, sports stadium, and tourist attractions. Crime rate went down by as much as 58% and the downtown area became filled with thriving businesses. To laud the city's efforts, the general public and even the media has called it the "Renaissance City". It is now home to thousands of legal businesses and is considered as the third largest insurance center in the country.
Public and private schools also helped in the revitalization of Newark. Popular points of interest include the Neward Museum, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Branch Brook Park, and other architectural structures.
