Newport is a city located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island. It has several nicknames including City by the Sea, Sailing Capital of the World, Queen of Summer Resorts, and America's Society Capital. Incorporated as a town in 1639, Newport was not incorporated as a city until 1784. A 2000 census revealed that the city has a total resident population of around 26,475.
The city of Newport is known for having one of the largest concentrations of colonial homes in the United States. Many of the homes were restored in the 20th century with the help of grants made by local Doris Duke. Several other efforts such as Operation Clapboard also helped to preserve Newport's colonial heritage. Aside from the Colonial architecture, Newport is also known for its mansions built during the Gilded Age. These have also received extensive restorative attention both from private and non-profit organizations. One of the most well known historic landmarks in the city is the Bellevue Avenue which is the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The Aquidneck Island, where Newport is located is home to many beautiful beaches both public and private. It attacks a fair amount of tourists each year. The largest public beach in the city is Easton's Beach, which is located on First Beach. It has a view of the Cliff Walk. Second beach, located in Middletown is known for its waves and is frequented by surfers from neighboring cities and from the rest of the country. Private beaches in the city include Bailey's Beach and Hazard's Beach.
