
Oakhurst is a Census Designated Place (SDC) in the Madera County of the US state of California. It sits 14 miles south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park. Oakhurst is part of the Madera-Chowchilla Metropolitan Statistical Area. As determined by the 2000 census, the CDP has an estimated population of 2,868. There are an estimated 1,250 households in the area and over 773 families.
The economy in Oakhurst is nicknamed 'The Birthplace of Computer Gaming' and it is home to the game developer Sierra On-Line until 1991. The gaming company is now based in Los Angeles. Several industry firsts were achieved in the CDP and these include the development of 3D adventure games. Another gaming achievement associated with Oakhurst was the development of the first online gaming network in 1989, which was the Sierra Network. As of 2009, Sierra continues to produce computer games and gaming consoles.
