Ojai is a city in the Ventura County of the US state of California. A 2003 Census estimate placed the city's population at 8,006, which makes Ojai one of the smaller cities in the area. The city sits in the Ojai valley that's surrounded by mountains and hills.
The city was originally settled by the Chumash Indians before it became one of the many land grants in the California Area. It was originally named 'Nordhoff, but due to the rise of anti-German sentiments in the United States in the years leading up to World War I, the city was renamed Ojai. The name is a Chumash term that translates into English as 'Valley of the Moon'. The high school in the area is still called Nordhoff and the junior high school is called Matilija. Both of the schools are known for their athletic involvement. .
Ojai appears in the 1937 movie 'Shangri-La'. American music group 'Greenday' shot their video 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' in Ojai.
