Oklahoma City, OK Travel Deals

Oklahoma City was created in 1889 when the once barren prairies were finally opened to white settlers during the Great Land Run. In no time at all thousands of settlers were making the barren plains of what was to be the metropolis of Oklahoma City their home. The capital was later moved from Guthfrie to its current location.
The city became the center in oil production before WWII and continued to progress before the slump in new developments occurred in the 70s and 80s with the migration of families to the suburb. In 1993, the government embarked a massive redevelopment program that aimed to rebuild the core of the city. This led to the construction of a new baseball park, a central library and renovations to the civic center, convention center and fairgrounds. This projects fueled interest in downtown housing and contributed to the further development of the city center.
Perhaps the biggest blow ever to hit the heart of the city occurred in 1995 when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed by disaffected war veteran Timothy McVeigh. The bombing tore through the building, killing 168 people, 19 of whom were children. McVeigh was later executed in 2001.
