Palm Springs is a dessert city in the US state of California and belongs to the Riverside County. It stands approximately 111 miles east of Los Angeles and 136 miles northeast from San Diego. A 2007 census reported that the city has a population of over 42,000.
Prior to the 1970s, hotels and recreational institutions in Palm Springs closed up for the summer months. However, as the population of retirees increased, more and more places decided to stay open throughout the summer and the city has later became a year-round living community attracting more and more people to it.
Architecture in the city is notable for its mid-century modern style, a tradition that stemmed from the aesthetics of the German Bahaus. It is perhaps most reflected in the work of Albert Frey. Frey is responsible for the design of the Palm Springs tram station, city hall, airport, and the Movie Colony Hotel.
At present, the economy of Palm Springs relies heavily on tourism and casino gambling. Most of the tourists arrive in the city during the winter months to escape the snow and cold of other states. The city is also known for its casinos and many tourists visit Palm Springs for the gaming as well.
Several festivals are held in Palm Springs throughout the year these festivals include The Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Palm Springs Art Museum presents travelling art expeditions and a variety of entertainment in the Annenvberg Theater. Sites of interest in Palm Springs include the Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium as well as The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.
