Panama City is the largest city in the Republic of Panama, which is the southernmost country of Central America and is situated on an isthmus that connects the Americas. It is because of this that The Republic of Panama is sometimes referred to as a transcontinental nation. It is estimated to have a population of more than 700,000 and it is located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. Aside from being the capital city, it is also the political and administrative center of its nation. The city is served by the Tocumen International Airport, which regularly flies passengers in and out of the city. It is also home to three professional football teams.
The city has a dense skyline with most of the buildings consisting of apartments, office complexes and hotels. It is considered an important hub for international banking. The city is also constantly ranked as one of the best retirement destinations in the American continent. Panama was chosen to be the American Capital of Culture in the year 2003. This honor was jointly given to Curitiba, Brazil.
There is a wide array of tourist destinations in Panama. The most popular sites are located in the old chapter of the city known as Casco Vejo. Some of the attractions found there include Las Bovedas, The National Institute of Culture Building, the Cathedral on Plaza de la Catedral, Teatro National, and the Museo del Canal. An area in Panama city known as 'Panama La Vieja' is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
