The city of Puerto Plata, formally known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata, is the capital of Dominican Republic. It belongs to the province of Puerto Plata and is famous for resorts such as Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada. The city is also noted for having the only aerial tramway in the Caribbean. Nicknames associated with Puerto Plata include La Ciudad de La Playa, La Tacita de Plata (The Silver Cup), and La Novia Del Atlantico. The city was founded in 1492. As of 2008, it was estimated that the city of Puerto Plata had a population of 496,882.
The economy of Puerto Plata is based on agribusiness, industrial and tourism. The city is known for its tourist spots that include the center of Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada. Tourist attractions include Ocean World, which is a water park located in the middle of the reefs on the beach of Cofresi. It is considered to be one of the most charming places in Puerto Plata. The Fortaleza de San Felipe is also a popular destination in the city. Tourists can also ride the aerial tramway known as Telefrico, which was inaugurated in 1975.
